A Wedding Teaser of a first look from The Barn at Gibbet Hill – Groton, MA

I recently shot an exciting wedding at my favorite venue, The Barn at Gibbet Hill. Here’s one of the images of Jenna and Adam from their fun filled wedding day. This image was a first look which, seems to be growing in popularity. The image was shoot at Gibbet Hill underneath this beautiful tree that overlooks the cattle field. Yes, big black angus wander around and can make for a fun background. I happened to capture them in one of the frames from the first look.

Normally the first look has taken place prior to the ceremony. This is really the only time the couple can have a few moments alone prior to the ceremony. I gotta say that in my experiences, I’ve come to look forward to the opportunity. Weddings will always evolve and new traditions will begin. This is just one of the new trends that seem to be catching steam.

I’d plan about 10 or 15 minutes for a shoot like this. Location can be a big part of pre planning and some sort of idea how you want to see your bride or groom for the first time also helps.

Here’s my results. This was shoot with three off camera flashes in the shade of the tree. This does require a bit of pre-setup but, for Gibbet Hill it’s easy enough to move your lights to a storage area close to the outdoor portraits. I prefer to shoot the group portraits outside at Gibbet Hill and do my best to capture the scenery. I mean as far as scenery, GH has some amazing locations to capture your ceremony, group portraits, and bride and groom portraits.

Also, I have to hand a big thanks to Jaime for coming out and shooting this wedding with me. All your help and competitive shooting really made the day exciting. Pushing each other to create better and better is where it’s at!

A Wedding at Kinney Bungalow, an old school venue with dramatic scenery – Narragansett, RI

I recently captured the wedding day of Diana and Bryan at Kinney Bungalow in Narragansett, RI. The day was cool, sunny, blue skies, and full of love. Yaaaaaay! Can I ask for more, no, I think not. You may remember the engagement shoot from a previous blog post, which is here. We totally connected when we meet and that proved to be so valuable. The day of the wedding came. I drove down to Narragansett, stopped at Aunt Carries for a lobstah roll, and headed to Diana’s place to start the day. The day had a great flow to it. Yes!!! I was also so stoked to have Jaime with me for this wedding. Having a second shooter always proves the better way to get the best take away from a wedding day.

Kinny Bungalow is a nostalgic wedding venue. You can get married on the property and the reception area is only steps away. Check out their website for sure!

A Boston Engagement Session at the Ring Fountains – Boston, MA

Here’s a little teaser image from a recent engagement session in Boston at the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway. Jim and Caitlin are getting married in December at one of my favorite venues, The Barn at Gibbet Hill in Groton. I really hope that there is some snow and bridal pictures outside. Ohhhhhh that would be so awesome!

This specific location is called the Ring Fountains in the Wharf District. I’ve always loved this area. I’ve driven past it after weddings in Boston and have seen amazing joy. A wedding party around this would be insane at night. Maybe a big back light to capture the water with two lights with grids behind me to highlight the wedding party at night would be freakin awesome! Okay the idea is out there universe, bring that wedding party to me.

This shot was only illuminated by the sun. I did some shots with flash only on the couple but, it just didn’t stir me like the profile version. There’s enough light to illuminate the background and the sun is almost completely obscured. In post, I went cold here to drive make that sky pop. I selectively dodged and burned the image to create more highlight of the kids playing yet, trying not to draw to much attention to them. The timing of the shot was crucial. Looking at the frames I shot, I spent about 10 minutes here getting the timing right.

I shot this on with my 15mm fisheye which really takes in a lot of information. It’s slightly distorted but, I think it was the best way to capture it all. Enjoy!

A Family Portrait Session at the Falmouth Heights Beach – Falmouth, Massachusetts

I recently shoot a family portrait session for a couple who’s wedding I’m shooting next year. The trip down to the Falmouth was pretty awesome. The top was down on the Smart, the weather was great, and the traffic was super light. I had scoped an hour for the shoot and was hoping for a great sunset shoot. Once we arrived at the beach, I setup my off camera flash, found a few locations, and went to work. Here’s my results.

The best part of being a wedding photographer is…

The best part of being a wedding photographer is the friends you make along the way. I met Keith Cephus back in the day. We met at the DWF Convention (a photographers convention) in 05′. We stayed in touch over the years, we also shot together at a wedding and killed it. So, when Keith hit me up to help him on an engagement shot in Cambridge, I was on it. We met at Logan then headed to Cambridge to shoot at a hotel that his couple, Roma and Parth, were staying at. We had a handful of locations at the hotel that we shot at. I helped out by shooting some video on a DSLR as Keith was shooting, assisting with lighting, and shooting a few frames as I could. One particular location turned out pretty sweet due to the reflections from the floor and indirect light from the wall of windows. Keith has an awesome frame of it on his blog. With that being said, half of the challenge when shooting couples is not only finding nice interaction, intensity, and connection but, looking for environments that can create the image. You’d be really surprised what can be done with light once you start seeing it in your mind. Ohhhh.. how can I forget. My wee’little Smart car got some camera love to. Smartie as a prop… yeah done it.

The 116th Boston Marathon 2012 from Natick, Massachusetts

Let’s talk about some heat! This year 116th Boston Marathon was a hot one with record high temps. This led to several thousand runners opting out. Even last year’s winner, Geoffrey Mutai, didn’t complete the race. Joshua Cassidy set a course record with his finish and upset Van Dyk’s hopes for his 10th win. Shirley Reilly had a big win over defending 5 time champ Wakako Tsuchida by a mere second at the finish line.

I arrived early, headed to Dunks, walked back to the water tables, and started shooting. It wasn’t to long before the wheelchairs started rolling through. Followed by the elite women runners, elite men, and then the hoards of runners. The whole experience is quite compelling. I’m sure running a marathon is capable by just about anyone. It our minds that can tell us differently. There’s runners of all ages. The oldest runner I caught was 78. Yeah, he’s a bad ass.

A Supah Fun Seaside Wedding in Duxbury, Massachusetts

Here’s another wedding that I second shot with Rene Tirado in Duxbury, Massachusetts. The bride and groom, Lauren and Ian, had prepared a wedding day with so many personal details. Rene and I started at Lauren’s house where there was a swarm of activity. There was make-up, hair, dresses, and an air of excitement. After about an hour I headed to Ian’s location to capture some images of him getting ready. His groomsmen were making jokes, jabbing fun, and commemorating in the excitement of the prior night. Soon we headed over to the ceremony and reception location which was a expansive sea side private estate. I quickly moved to capture the details and moments prior to the start of the ceremony.

One of the benefits of second shooting is being able capture different perspectives than the lead shooter. For example, as the bride was walking down the isle I was able to capture a profile shot through the crowd and a perspective shot from behind Ian’s shoulder as he looked at his bride, Lauren. Once the ceremony wrapped up we headed to the seashore to capture the group portraits and then the portraits of Lauren and Ian. I saw an opportunity to create some fun images with an old 46 Chevy truck and jumped into action. I ask Ian to get into the truck, as if he was driving, and had Lauren looking through the passenger’s window. I was trying to create an image where Ian had pulled over to pickup his sensation bride. You can see the image below and a few more are in the slide show. The day seemed to fly by and before you knew it was time to go. Wow, what a day! You can see some of my favorite images below. Hurricane or not, I’m shooting this Engagement Session – Nashoba Winery – Bolton, MA

It was blasted all over the news. A hurricane called Irene was bearing down on the east coast. One of the biggest storms to hit the east coast in history. Wow! Batten down the hatches and hunker down for this? Nah, I had an engagement session scheduled and if my clients, Diana and Bryan, were up for it so was I. We met at Nashoba Winery in Bolton, Massachusetts at about 1pm. By that time the bands of rain were on a 30-40 minute cycle. As I was driving the rain started, I arrived and the rain stopped. We quickly moved through the vineyard and shot some fun images. No sooner was I hitting my rhythm shooting the rain started again. We quickly moved to a dry location, waited a little bit, and headed out in a light drizzle. Yes, I do shoot in the rain. This is why I use professional weather sealed gear.

We came upon a set of apple trees and I had this idea to capture them underneath it. Though, I had to light them to get the clouds to show up in the image. I ran back to my little Smart car, picked a sunflower that was nearby, and grabbed my Cheetah stand with a 580ex fired by the Flex 5. I choose not to use ETTL and went with a manual setting. I find it’s easier after learning DOFE. I setup the flash, fired off a few test shots, and nailed it after 2 shots. Yup, I was pleased with the results and had to chimp a little to show the results. We shot some more but, for me this image was THE image that portrayed their love to me.

Shooting an engagement session is a chance for the clients to get to know their photographer. It’s also a time for the photographer to create unique images and tickle the creative soul. What I learned from the shoot is to never give up come rain or hurricane. Clear the tablet, get to know your clients, and make an effort to create images that represent their love.

A Wedding at Black Rock Country Club – Hingham, Massachusetts

I recently second shot a wedding with Rene Tirado at the Black Rock Country Club in Hingham, Massachusetts. I started the day off shooting the groom, Alan, and groomsmen while Rene shot the bride, Lindsay, and the bridesmaids. We met at the country club for the ceremony. It was sunny, a bit warm, and a perfect day for a wedding. The ceremony was short but, sweet and landed us at the AC’d reception. Rene headed out to shoot the portraits while I headed to the reception site to get some overall and detail shots. I shot some more of my HDR images, mostly 3 exposures on tripod. I like the look if you can get it right but, for some it’s so awesome! Back to the reception. Let’s talk about how sweet it was to shoot the reception. First off the room was lit up with LEDs in the ceiling that illuminated the sheer fabric… oh yeah, fun! Here’s some of my favorites from the day.

A Wedding Reception at the Barn at Gibbet Hill – Groton, Massachusetts

A recently shot an awesome wedding reception at the Barn at Gibbet Hill, one of my favorite wedding venues. Natalia and Ben were married earlier this year and wanted to share their wedding day celebration with their friends and family in New England. We were blessed with a spectacular summer day that was warm and capped off with a sensational sunset. We started the day off with family portraits then we had the introductions, first dance, speeches, cake cutting, and my favorite, dancing! As the sun was setting (and vendor meals were being served) I headed outside to capture some amazing HDR images of the Barn and the surrounding property. The Barn at Gibbet Hill has a multifunctional use. There’s two wedding venues. One is the Barn and the second is up the hill at the old mansion called Top of the Hill (I’ve never shot a wedding there and I’m willing to make a great discount to the couple who does). There is also a restaurant Gibbet Hill Grill, a real working Black Angus cattle farm, and a vegetable farm as well. It’s really an amazing property where I have produced some of my best wedding images. Yeah, I have a deep love for the Barn and the weddings I’ve had there. Here’s some of my favorite images from Natalia and Ben’s day.
